Aldi has enjoyed its most profitable Christmas season ever - and has marked its success by pledging a wage hike for staff that will make it the highest paying supermarket in the UK.
More than 3,000 employees will earn £8.53 per hour from February 1, with those in London paid £9.75.
While the London rates are the same as those announced by fellow discounter Lidl last November, Aldi staff outside the capital will earn 7p an hour more than Lidl employees.
Aldi, which is about to open its 700th store in the UK, is in the midst of a recruitment drive. Seventy new stores are planned for 2017 and a further 230 outlets will have opened by 2022, requiring around 4,000 additional staff.
The supermarket has enjoyed a bumper festive season, with total sales in December 15 percent higher than during the same period in 2015.
Sales of its premium range increased by 27 percent during December and a new range of 'Specially Selected' products also flew off the shelves, as did more than two million bottles of £9.99 Prosecco, 4.5 million packs of carrots, two million packs of Brussel sprouts and two million packs of parsnips.
