Online retail giant Amazon is taking on handcrafted goods e-tailer Etsy with the launch of a new service.
'Handmade at Amazon' went live last week, offering the site's 285 million shoppers a choice of 80,000 products created by 5,000 artisan craftspeople from around 60 countries.
With Christmas looming, Amazon hopes to challenge Etsy's dominance in the online arts and crafts marketplace, which saw the site achieve global sales of over $1 billion during the first half of this year.
Amazon said customer feedback and the thousands of searches it has every day from shoppers looking for handmade or handcrafted items inspired the launch of the new service.
