The Card Factory is helping its customers to avoid the hated 5p plastic bag charge by offering them ones without handles instead.
Guidance issued by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) stipulates that retailers employing more than 250 people must charge for bags that are new, plastic, 70 microns thick or less, have handles, an opening and are not sealed.
So the greeting card specialist has been cutting the handles of bags to make them comply with the regulations.
The move by the retailer comes after a recent survey by Voucher Codes Pro revealed that 51 percent of 2,784 people questioned as part of the study admitted to stealing bags since the 5p levy was introduced last October. If the behaviour of those consumers is typical, it suggests £26.7 million worth of plastic bags have been stolen in the past four months.
