Department store chain Debenhams enjoyed a record breaking Christmas trading period, selling a staggering nine million festive gifts, including two million toys and three million food related presents.
The store out performed all expectations with a 1.9 percent increase in like-for-like sales in the 19 weeks to January 9. There was a rise of 12 percent in online sales during the period, boosted by a 36 percent increase during Christmas week, compared to the previous year.
The results vindicate the retailer's efforts to reverse years of falling profits by improving its online delivery service, introduce more brands and cut back on discounting.
