People are choosing to spend their increasingly stretched budgets on activities and experiences rather than fashion, newly released figures suggest.
New data from the BDO high street sales tracker showed fashion sales falling 3.6 percent in May - the fourth month of declining sales this year.
By contrast, the lifestyle sector saw an increase of just under four percent in sales last month.
The challenges facing the fashion sector have been graphically demonstrated by a string of high street retailers falling into administration.
Style Group Brands, the parent company of the Jacques Vert and Dash brands, is currently teetering on the brink of administration and British heritage brand Jaeger recently collapsed.
Commenting on the data, BDO said fashion retailers were caught in "a worrying downward spiral".
