Dozens of Marks & Spencer stores in the UK are expected to be closed as part of the brand's turnaround plans.
It is anticipated yet more branches will be repurposed as Simply Food outlets, reflecting the success of the retailer's grocery sales compared to its ailing fashion business.
There is also speculation that M&S may close many of its Chinese stores, as the chain attempts to streamline its sprawling estate.
M&S currently has 914 stores in the UK and a further 468 outlets abroad, more than many of its retail rivals.
The retailer, which is due to release interim results this week, is refusing to comment on what it has dismissed as "rumours".
