Rugby World Cup and Great British Bake Off drive retail sales surge

On the face of it, the Rugby World Cup and The Great British Bake Off would appear to have little in common - but both have been credited with creating a surge in UK retail sales last month.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said a hike in demand in alcohol and snacks sales linked to the Rugby World Cup and a resurgence of interest in baking related products generated by the Bake Off were among the factors driving the fastest annual increase in like for like sales for six months in September.

Fashion, footwear and furniture also did well, with sales figures in these categories bolstered by last minute back to school shopping and the fact that the timing of the August Bank Holiday weekend meant sales during this period fell into September's, rather than August's, data.

This contributed to September's sales values showing an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the same month in 2014.
