High street sales grew at a much stronger rate than expected in September, a survey by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has shown.
And the growth is expected to continue into next month, according to the CBI's latest Distributive Trades Survey.
Of 119 firms who responded to the survey, 60 percent of retailers said sales volumes were up in September compared to the previous month.
Sales were particularly strong in the clothing, grocery and specialist food and drink sectors, while 85 percent of motor traders reported sales volumes were up on the same period the previous year.
However, retail sector internet sales volumes grew more slowly than in the previous month.
