A surge in demand for adult colouring books is credited with driving what are expected to be higher than forecast profits at WH Smith.
Strong stationery sales and seasonal offers also boosted performance during the Christmas trading period, with the Group's 700 plus railway station and airport outlets doing particularly well.
WH Smith recorded a five percent increase in like-for-like sales at these 'travel sites' for the 20 weeks to January 16, contributing to a like for like sales increase across the Group of two percent. Total sales were up four percent during the period.
While performance across WH Smith's town centre stores has been weaker than those at travel sites, the retailer enjoyed a surge in demand during the run up to Christmas and the New Year, with like for like high street sales up two percent in the five weeks ending January 2.
