Exports of some of Britain's favourite biscuits are soaring as foreigners develop a taste for our sweet treats.
The humble McVitie's Digestive particularly appeals to foreign palates, with sales soaring 20 percent over the past 12 months alone.
United Biscuits, which produces McVitie's Digestives, Jaffa Cakes, Penguin bars and a number of other popular brands such as Twiglets, Mini Cheddars and Jacob's Crackers, has seen export sales rise by 50 percent in three years. Total exports are expected to increase by another 50 percent over the next five years.
The company, which is owned by Turkish company Yildiz Holding, plans to invest £15 million in its plant in Harlesden, West London - already the largest biscuit factory in Europe - to further increase its capacity to cope with anticipated future demand.
