Aldi is expected to overtake the Co-op this week to become the UK's fifth largest grocery store in terms of market share.

A strong sales performance over the Christmas period is expected to help Aldi move up the rankings when Kantar Worldpanel's Grocery Market Share index is released later this week.

The Co-op currently holds a 6.4 percent market share, with Aldi at 5.6 percent. Having taken market share from its competitors, however, Aldi is now expected to top six percent.

While this should be enough to move it into fifth place, Aldi still has a long way to go before it topples any of the 'Big Four' supermarkets from their positions. Its closest rival Morrisons currently holds 10.8 percent of the market share.
