Big Four supermarket Asda has installed an automated parcel vending machine in a UK first.
The vending tower, installed at Asda's Trafford Park store, is 16 ft tall and 8ft wide and can hold up to 500 parcels at a time.
The tower allows customers to collect online orders from Asda's clothing arm - George - and a few third party partners such as Asos, Decathlon and Missguided. It also accepts returns.
Customers can select parcel tower collection at checkout when they purchase items online and are then sent a special barcode to their smartphones which they scan on arrival at the tower. Their parcel is then delivered within 60 seconds.
More than 100 parcel towers have been installed across the United States by Walmart - Asda's parent company - but it is not yet known whether more are on the cards for the UK.
