Overseas visitors and British 'staycationers' helped the UK high street to its best month in almost two years.
The latest High Street Sales Tracker from accountancy company BDO showed overall like for like sales were up two percent in August.
Lifestyle goods saw a 3.1 percent year on year sales hike, helped by a sharp increase in the number of British staycationers and a rise in the number of foreign visitors attracted by the weak pound.
Fashion like for like retail sales were also up 1.5 per cent - its best performance in nine months - and homeware sales increased by 1.9 percent year on year.
But while like for like sales saw an increase, the number of people actually venturing out to the shops fell in August, with shoppers deterred by the less than summery weather.
