The Co-Op has pledged to open 100 new food stores before the end of the year.
Twelve new outlets have opened so far in 2016, and The Co-Operative Group says its growth programme will continue apace.
The Group recently sold its remaining Somerfield stores, having previously shed its Co-Op Pharmacy branches and other loss making arms of the business.
It is hoping the bold strategy of food store openings will help it overcome what have been fairly torrid financial problems - the growth announcement came just weeks after it revealed annual losses at the Co-Operative Band had more than doubled, necessitating the closure of some branches.
