High street fashion retailers have suffered their worst period for sales in eight years, according to new figures.
After a strong June, sales slumped 3.5 percent year on year in July, according to data compiled by the BDO High Street Sales Tracker.
Analysts believe the fall in fashion sales came as shoppers prioritised spending on essentials amid concerns about rising inflation.
Despite strong performances in the homeware and lifestyle retail sales sectors - up 5.8 percent and 4.5 percent year on year - the dip in fashion spending meant overall sales in July were down 0.6 percent on the same month last year.
