Lidl employees are to become the best paid supermarket staff in the UK.
The discount grocery giant has promised to meet new guidelines set down by the Living Wage Foundation, raising wages by 3.6 percent outside London and 4.6 percent within the M25.
This will mean the wages of staff outside London will increase from an hourly rate of £8.45 to £8.75. Those in the capital will see their wages go up from £9.75 to £10.20 per hour.
The pay rise will come into effect from March 1 next year and will cost Lidl UK around £3.5 million.
Lidl, which employs 16,000 staff in the UK, is among 3,600 companies, including Google and Ikea, who have promised to match the Living Wage Foundation's recommended pay rates.
