Wet weather and late Bank Holiday dampens August sales

The miserable weather appears to have dampened Britons' shopping enthusiasm in August, with figures showing a fall of one percent in like for like retail sales compared to the same period last year.

However, the figures released by the British Retail Consortium/KPMG Sales Monitor were distorted by the late timing of the Bank Holiday - traditionally a key back to school shopping day - which fell in the September reporting period.

So while categories such as footwear and clothing, both of which rely heavily on back to school shoppers, experienced a reduction in sales during August compared to the same month in 2014, the deficit should be recouped in the September figures.
